SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.10 g, 3 h), circa 484-483. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in both, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVRΑϘΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Arethousa to right, wearing hair band and pearl necklace with pendant; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 39 (V26/R23). HGC 2, 1304. Randazzo 237 (same dies). SNG ANS 7 (same obverse die). Harshly cleaned and remnants of horn silver and with Arethousa's eye somewhat tooled, otherwise, nearly very fine.
